This weekend I was greeted with a male and female cardinal right outside my house. I love cardinals; they are so pretty. The female cardinal really caught my attention. There was something about that bright red beak that made me smile in a way that filled me with joy. In the picture, you'll also notice that my trees are finally getting buds on them and that makes me so happy, too.
The signs of new life are all around us and I cannot help but compare this Spring - particularly this Spring - with the story of this week. All around us is death and destruction. Yet, something is happening; new life is coming forth. Sound familiar? In the darkness of the last supper and the washing of the feet and the betrayal in the garden and even the in the final breath of our Savior, something is happening. In the midst of the darkness, new life comes forth.
I believe that God is moving and creating new life during this season as God always has. But since our version of life has stopped, we can see it better and feel it deeper than we could ever before.
The beak of this female cardinal and the buds on the trees are like a little bright spot in the gloom of life, just like Jesus is the bright spot in our life. And so I wonder where you see the light coming forth around you: the light of new life, the light that breaks up the darkness, the very light of Christ? Where are you seeing God today?
I see God in so many ways, not the least of which being in you. I am grateful for you today and God is grateful for you, too, because God is shining that light through your very existence in this family and community.
Peace be with you today.
