Lectionary

SOTH  Narrative Lectionary for 2011-2012

"Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start! When you read you begin with ABC, when you sing you begin with Do Re Me..." The Sound of Music is one of my favorite stories and musicals. And this song that Maria sings is one that I can't ever seem to get out of my head. But, it does speak a truth, when we begin, we should begin at the beginning, not jump around as it is confusing.

With this in mind we are using a different set of readings for our worship services this year. It's called "The Narrative Lectionary." The Narrative Lectionary is a schedule of readings that begins at the beginning of the Bible with Genesis, flows through the entire Old Testament, choosing important and critical stories along the way, then turns to the Gospels (this year we will focus on Mark) and then selects some passages from the Apostle Paul and ends with Revelation. Our readings for the year will follow the outline of the Bible. The big idea is to present an overview of the entire narrative (or story) of the Bible in one nine month period. The hope is that by doing this worship participants will, over the nine months, get a feel and a flavor for the over arching flow of the Biblical story, in order, focused on the major stories and issues along the way. We believe that starting at the beginning and working our way through the Bible is a very good way to begin!

Now, if your worried about Christmas and Easter and our regular "Holidays" have no fear. The Narrative Lectionary is laid out in such a way so that we will still celebrate all our important holiday's on-time and on the right days!

Below is the schedule of readings. We look forward to this journey with you through the Narrative Lectionary and all of God's story found in the Bible!!
