Good news about the state of
our troop:
1. Our April recharter lists 76
Scouts in the troop. Of these, 14 are boys who
recently joined after crossing over from Cub
Scouts. Two boys are new scouts who are older
(7th and 8th grades) and were never in Cub Scouts,
but who have friends in the troop.
2. This spring, we have three
new Eagle Scouts (Rick Evans' son, Charlie;
Jed Jenkins, Jr.; and Nathan Elliott) who have
been approved by the national office and two
Eagle Scout candidates (James Lantz and Mike
McTigue) who have completed all requirements
except for the Eagle Board of Review. Several
more Scouts are planning Eagle service projects
and working on their last few merit badges.
3. The Troop Committee has four
outgoing members and five incoming members.
We are replacing chairs for Activities, Equipment,
and one of our two Finance Co-Chairs, plus we
are adding a Recruitment chair to help coordinate
the recruiting process. The fifth change is
a new Committee Chair, Justin Cole, who will
take my place sometime after summer camp. Justin
is an Eagle Scout who grew up in New England.
He's a pilot for Northwest Airlines. Justin
has been an ASM, and he is currently a co-coordinator
for this year's summer camp. Justin's son, Evan,
is a 7th grader.
4. We expect 45-50 scouts to attend
summer camp at Voyager Bay. Two of our Eagle
Scouts will be co-camp directors, Nathan Hause
and Greg Holmes. Another of our Eagles will
be our lifeguard (Dave's son, Chris Smith).
We have a contingent of 25 Scouts and adults
going to Philmont as well.
5. Under the direction of Scoutmaster
Jeff Burrows and the many ASMs the troop has,
we continue to offer an outdoor program that
introduces the Scouts to new outdoor pursuits.
Some of the activities have included trout fishing
near Voyager Bay, river canoeing on the St.Croix,
and dog mushing during a winter campout at Ok
Pik, part of the Northern Tier national Boy
Scout facility near Ely. And our Scouts' favorite
destination is still Voyager Bay.
6. The troop will be supplying
tents and other camping equipment for the SOTH
confirmation class to use when they go to Voyager
Bay in July. Thank you for your continued support
of Troop 123 and its relationship with Shepherd
of the Hills Lutheran Church.
