50th Anniversary Highlights
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF
MINISTRY: 1954-2004
2004 was a most rewarding year in the life
of Shepherd of the Hills, as we reflected
on all Shepherd has accomplished and celebrated
the many facets of our ministry, both current
and past. Here are just some of the many
ways we reflected this year:
- Highlight Sunday, May, 2004
Pastor Leesa and a group of confirmation
age students called Fools For Christ
led worship through a mime presentation
about following Jesus.
- Special Guests, June, 2004
Pastor Bill Schonebaum and his wife
Karen returned to Shepherd to share
memories from their time here in the
60's with Pastor Joyce and Margaret
Ranum.
- Highlight Sunday, June, 2004
Gary Nash, Chair of the Shepherd Foundation,
presented a message featuring the Foundation
and the opportunities that exist to
support our mission for the future.
- Special Guest, July, 2004 Louise
Sorenson, wife of the late Pastor Grant
Sorenson, returned to Shepherd to share
congratulations, visit and reminisce
on all that Shepherd has accomplished.
- Highlight Sunday, July, 2004
Julie Showers, council president, presented
an overview of Shepherd's governing
system and our opportunities for the
future.
- Special Guests, August, 2004
Pastor Jim Lindekugel and his wife,
Sandy, returned to share a sermon and
memories from their time here.
- Highlight Sunday, August, 2004
Naomi Gutz presented an overview of
Youth Ministry at Shepherd, highlighting
the quality programs for children and
high school youth.
- Special Guests, August, 2004
Pastor John Trelstad and his wife, Carol,
returned to Shepherd. He gave a wonderful
sermon at two worship services, and
they shared memories and visited between
services with friends and members.
- Highlight Sunday, September, 2004
Rally Day Sunday: A day designated to
honor Sunday School and all that it
has meant at Shepherd. On this day a
special team designed a fantastic silent
auction, picnic and carnival that truly
included something for everyone. Proceeds
of more than $7,500 will be used for
Youth Outdoor Ministry Scholarships,
enabling children and youth to attend
bible camps who would not otherwise
be able to do so.
- Special Guests, October, 2004
Pastor Rube Groehler and his wife, Arlene,
returned to Shepherd with Pastor Rube
preaching at both services. We also
enjoyed fellowship following the capsule
ceremony in which we unveiled the contents
of the cornerstone buried in 1960.
- Highlight Sunday, October, 2004
Paul and Carole Johnson presented a
summary of Shepherd's outreach and mission
over the past 50 years and challenged
Shepherd to look ahead to the possibilities
for outreach heading forward.
- 50th Anniversary Book: Gary
& Billie Poorman led an incredible
group who wrote a most enriching history
of Shepherd of the Hills. This lifetime
keepsake honors all who have contributed
to Shepherd's rich heritage.
- 50th Anniversary Golf Shirts:
Rick & Nancy Shaeffer designed and
took orders for golf shirts with the
Catch The Spirit logo. Proceeds went
to the 2005 youth mission trip.
- 50th Anniversary Pictorial Directory:
Joann Smith and Joni Stone organized
the pictorial directory photography
sessions with Lifetouch and put together
a new directory to mark the occasion
of our 50th anniversary.
Shepherd of the Hills has
great reason to celebrate and honor 50 years
of ministry and is challenged to Catch
the Spirit for the next 50 to come!
